Sean Carpio - Waves of a Present (Limited 10" Vinyl)

Released on Dublin's vinyl-only Ten Spot Records, this is the debut solo album from Seán Carpio, the Peruvian/Irish jazz drummer and multi-instrumentalist whose CV runs from Aoife Nessa Frances and Cian Nugent to a solo drum role in Enda Walsh's acclaimed theatre production Medicine. Notably, it also marks his first outing as a vocalist and lyricist, with six original compositions written and performed entirely by Carpio himself, joined by guest vocals from Aoife Nessa Frances and bass clarinet from Robert Stillman of The Smile's touring band.

Recorded to tape over two sessions with Dek Hynes, one in a remote corner of the Irish countryside and one in Carpio's own Dublin studio, the record swells with reverb-drenched atmosphere and thick, expressive percussion. 'Ancestral Love' builds from downtrodden to euphoric on off-kilter drumming and shoegazing vocals, while 'Dunes' offers lush chamber pop with harmonies arcing back on themselves. Mixed with Brendan Jenkinson (Villagers, John Francis Flynn) and mastered from quarter-inch analog tape, it was designed to be heard on vinyl. Hand numbered 10" in a lithographically printed tip-on gatefold jacket by Ror Conaty, limited to 500 copies.
