NoT SQuAreS – Bolts (Vinyl)

The second album from the Belfast trio, released on Galway's Strange Brew Rekkids in 2015. Not Squares emerged from the post-Good Friday Agreement scene in the North as a rambunctious dance-punk band, put out their debut Yeah OK on the Richter Collective in 2010, then evolved into something poppier and more purpose-built for the floor, which is exactly what Bolts delivers.

Ten tracks of keys, bass, vocals and drums designed to be heard as one seamless mix from start to finish, deliberately echoing and referencing itself throughout, with motorway junction interludes M2, M4, M6 and M8 driving between the songs. Oops Said Hi brings vocoder-assisted electronic pop, Fall Far and Hey You match house-nodding beats to proper choruses, and the whole thing lands somewhere between disco, garage basslines and early house four-to-the-floor.
