James Vincent McMorrow – Grapefruit Season (Gatefold Vinyl)

The fifth album, and the one where McMorrow stopped trying to make the record people expected. Made across Dublin, London and LA with Paul Epworth, Kenny Beats, Lil Silva and Patrick Wimberly of Chairlift behind the desk, it jumps from Afrobeat-leaning pop on Gone to piano balladry on Poison to You to the acoustic sound that first made his name on Waiting, all held together by that falsetto and a lyrics about waiting to feel like a grown-up and realising the feeling never arrives. Finished before the pandemic, then pulled apart and rebuilt during it.
