The great Irish winter album, back on vinyl for its 50th anniversary. Recorded in September 1975 at Dublin's Trend Studios, where the band had cut their first demos, Horslips' fifth album is a complete departure: an entirely acoustic collection of carols, Carolan tunes and seasonal songs of winter, tucked between the electric fire of The Unfortunate Cup Of Tea and the epic sweep of The Book Of Invasions. Sung in Irish, English and even Manx, it moves from the sacred hush of Rug Muire Mac Do Dhia and Do'n Oíche Úd I mBeithil to the fireside lift of the Thompson's/Cottage In The Grove reels, the band swapping their electric arsenal for fiddles, whistles, concertina, harpsichord and pipes. An unplugged album decades before the term existed, it earned the band a gold disc and has quietly become an essential Irish Christmas record.
